Oh dear, the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, unhinged

So much for Republicans presenting US-based Puerto Rican Evangelical preacher - and right-wing religious darling - Samuel Rodriguez as a "centrist" (from a homily taped in November of 2006):
We have radical Muslims, radical homosexuals, radical abortionists, we need radical born-again spirit-filled Christians to arise. Do you follow me? We don't need anymore sissy Christians, Oprah Winfrey Christians. we need prophetic, devil-stomping, demon-reputing, blood washed Bible-believing, free-from-sin Christians, are you here in this place right now! Are you here in this place right now! We need Christians that don't know how to whine and complain, but have the anointy to bind and release in the NAAAAAAAYME of JEEESAHSSSSSSS
That, from a GREAT article posted on AlterNet a couple of days ago ('Hispanic Karl Rove' Helps Shape Democratic Party 'Centrist' Positions) in which Bruce Wilson takes Democrats to task for even entertaining the unhinged homophobic preacher as a 'centrist'.

From his essay:
Sammy Rodriguez is a point man working to formulate and advance what seems to be a two-pronged strategy: 1) colonize and ideologically infiltrate the left, alienate its activist base, and tie the Democratic Party in knots, 2) work to reshape and rebrand the right and the GOP, as an ethnically inclusive, pseudo-progressive "Rainbow" movement. The latter strategy was field tested in the pro-Proposition 8 push last year, in California.
Reminds me of that other right-wing 'centrist' darling, Reverend Miguel Rivera, as captured on tape by myself back in May as he riled against NYS Governor David Paterson:

DNC names Latina lesbian and Latino transman as at-large Democratic Convention delegates

This Friday, as a prelude to this years Democratic National Convention taking place this August in Denver, the Executive Committee of the Democratic National Committee selected 25 at-large delegates to the Convention as members of the DNC's standing Platform, Rules and Credentials Committees.

Of the 25 at-large delegates, seven LGBT individuals were named to the three different committees and the selection is striking in its diversity.

Of four LGBT individuals named to the Platform Committee - which is responsible for drafting and recommending a proposed National Platform for approval at the convention - two are Hispanic:

Ingrid Duran (above) is a Board Member of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), Chair of the National Hispana Ledareship Institute (NHLI) and Co-Founder and Principal of D&P Creative Strategies, which seeks to "increase the role of corporate, legislative and philanthropic efforts in addressing the concerns of Latinos, women and LGBT communities."

Previously Ms. Duran had served as President of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, as an officer of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and as a member of President Bill Clinton's Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS.

Diego Sanchez (right) is a transgender man who acts as the Director of Public Relations and External Affairs at the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. Mr. Sanchez has also served on the Board of the Human Rights Campaign and the Boston-based Latino grassroots organization Somos Latinos LGBT. In the past he was also named by Hispanic Business magazine as one of the Top 100 Most Powerful Latinos in Corporate America.

They are joined on the Platform Committee by Dr. Marjorie Hill, an African-American woman who is the current Executive Director of the New York's Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), and State Rep. Patricia Todd of Alabama.

In addition, Clare Lucas, Chair of the the DNC's Gay/Lesbian Leadership Council, and Evan Low - an Asian-American gay man who was elected last year to the Campbell City Council in California at the age of 23 - were named to the Rules Committee.

Bob Rogan, a Congressional Chief of Staff from Vermont was named to the Credentials Committee.

All at-large delegates were chosen at the recommendation of DNC chair - and former presidential candidate - Gov. Howard Dean, and will join hundreds of other delegates at the convention, including other LGBT individuals, selected by their states of origin.

UPDATE (Jan. 16, 2008): Here is the official DNC press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 16, 2008
DNC ELECTS RECORD NUMBER OF LGBT MEMBERS TO 2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION STANDING COMMITTEES

Appointments Reflect Strength, Diversity and Energy of Democratic Party

DENVER - The Executive Committee of the Democratic National Committee(DNC) unanimously elected DNC Chairman Howard Dean's nominations for the
Chairs and members of the 2008 Democratic National Convention Standing Committees, including a record number of openly LGBT members. Dean's LGBT appointments include Dr. Marjorie Hill of the Gay Men's Health Crisis organization in New York, Diego Sanchez from AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, State Representative Patricia Todd of Alabama, and Ingrid Duran of Virginia to serve on the Platform Committee, along with Claire Lucas and Evan Low of California to the Rules Committee and Bob Rogan of Vermont to the Credentials Committee.

In addition to appointing a record number of LGBT standing committee members, Dean was also the first DNC chair to appoint a member of the
transgender community to a Convention committee.

The Standing Committees of the Convention are responsible for reviewing Convention business and formulating recommendations for consideration by Convention delegates.

The Executive Committee's vote took place during
the panel's recent meeting in Denver, site of the four-day Convention in August.

"The record turnout and enthusiasm we've seen for our Democratic candidates is a clear sign that Americans trust Democrats to bring much
needed change to our country," said Governor Dean.

"These outstanding leaders reflect the great strength, diversity and energy of the Democratic Party, and I'm confident their efforts will ensure our
Convention in Denver is reflective of our shared values and our nominee's vision for America."

The elections included the Chairs and 25 Party Leader and ElectedOfficial (PLEO) members of the three Convention Standing Committees:

Credentials, Platform and Rules. Each committee has a total of 186 members. An additional 161 members elected by each of the states' and territories' Convention delegations will join Governor Dean's
appointments to the committees later this spring.

For a full list of and biographical information on the Chairs and PLEO members from each Standing Committee, visit

http://www.demconvention.com/a/standingcommittees.pdf .

Credentials Committee The Credentials Committee is charged with coordinating issues aroundthe selection of delegates and alternates to the Convention and will

likely meet in the summer. The committee will issue a report that is the first official item of business at the Convention.

Platform Committee The Platform Committee is responsible for drafting and recommending a

proposed National Platform for approval at the Convention. After conducting hearings and forums to collect testimony on issues and policies to potentially include in the platform, the committee is likely to meet sometime in July.

Rules Committee The Rules Committee is responsible for proposing the Permanent Rules for the Convention, adopting the proposed Convention agenda and making recommendations for permanent Convention officers - all addressed as the second official item of business at the Convention. The committee will meet sometime in August, prior to the Convention.

Gloria is for Hillary

First of all, for those of you who don't know, there once was a national Latino LGBT organization called LLEGO.

Second of all, I was personna non-grata at LLEGO for years due to my criticism of the organization (some ex-staffers will still not talk to me).

Third of all, Gloria Nieto used to be head of the LLEGO Board of Directors so let's just say that I wasn't necessarily one of her favorite persons.

And then LLEGO closed for a plethora of reasons and then a miracle happened: Gloria and I became like friends! Yay!

Fourth of all, Gloria wanted to blog so she reached out and I explained the ins and outs of setting up a blog. She called it Miss Wild Thing. For some reason, I feel the blog was partly my baby.

So now, as we take a look at Latino LGBT leaders involved in politics who have taken a stand in these elections, I might as well point out that today's San Francisco Chronicle quoted Gloria (pictured above with Gloria Steinem) on the election and mentioned her blog - which speaks to her influence as one of the few Latina lesbian women involved in national politics over the last couple of decades.

Hm, I also will not hold it against her that she is pulling for Hillary. Sigh.

Homosexual Immorality

It might have been shocking (if not surprising) to hear General Peter Pace, the Joint Chief of Staff and top military leader in Iraq, call homosexuals "immoral" in a Chicago Tribune interview a couple of days ago but it's even more shocking that the two leading Democratic presidential candidates have had so much trouble distancing themselves from his comments.

You would think that both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama would be smart enough to unequivocally oppose those comments. Alas, neither did.

To wit:
There is no reason why in 2007 any Democrat (ole Republican for that matter) should hesitate at all on this question. I doubt either truly thinks that homosexuality is immoral but that they should even hedge on the issue speaks to political pandering at its worst.

UPDATE: Both camps issued clarifications through spokespersons according to The NY Times.

The Rev. Ruben Diaz, Sr. talks about recent NYS ruling on same-sex marriages

Local Spanish-language newspaper IMPACTO interviews the Reverend Ruben Diaz, Sr. on a recent ruling by the New York State Court of Appeals not to recognize the right to marry for same-sex couples.

Diaz, also a New York State Senator from the Bronx, tells IMPACTO that, after the ruling, "there is now no way that organizations, movements or legal claims can get these unions recognized" even if he does expect legislative challenges to the State Constitution. "Perhaps in the Assembly, they (homosexuals) will be able to gather support, because the Democrats are in power, but not in the Senate, where the majority is Republican and some of the Democrats are against gay marriage."

He also continues to blur his responsibilities as an elected official and his role as an evangelical preacher: "I believe that my religion as a pastor and preacher of evangelical teaching, bars me from promoting a law of that kind."

But, in what the newspaper notes is a marked departure from past statements by the Reverend, he also ads "Of what I am absolutely in favor is that there should not be any discrimination against those people based on their sexual preferences in none of these areas," referring to access to education, housing and health services.

Diaz has previously editorialized on the marriage issue elsewhere as well.

Speaking of State Senators from the Bronx, Democrat State Senator Efraim Gonzalez, Jr., was indicted on Friday for allegedly using $37,000 dollars given to a charity organization he founded towards, among other things, trips to the Caribbean and baseball game tickets. Hm, I guess a man is not guilty until proven so, but why is there and indictment here when Diaz himself has gotten away with pretty much the same thing?

Meanwhile, accross the Hudson River...another Hispanic homophobe!

Ok, so we'd been a tad political as of late. But for this installment, we are leaving New York City - well, actually New York State for that matter - to focus on a tidbit related to New Jersey's gubernatorial race.

Today, the New Jersey Star-Ledger takes a look at how both the Republican candidate, Doug Forrester, and the Democratic contender, Jon Corzine, are making efforts to appeal for the Latino vote in New Jersey.

The article says that while Corzine has appointed Latino leaders to some high-ranking campaign positions (US Representative Robert Mendez is the co-chair of Corzine's campaign), Forrester aknowledges that he has no high-ranking Latinos on his campaign staff and has had to import high-profile out-of state Republican Hispanic politicians to help him campaign.

So, accoding to the article, on Monday there was Florida Senator Mel Martinez, walking down "
Bergenline Avenue in Union City with Forrester, acting as his unofficial translator [while] Forrester's staff handed out fliers in Spanish that, translated, read Strong family values, and pictured him with his wife and three children."

Hm, let's look back at some excerpts from a Miami Herald article published back on April
8th on Mel Martinez and his strong family values ("Schiavo memo trips rookie senator" by Lesley Clark):

The [Folorida Senate] campaign ads were bitterly divisive, even by the standards of a bare-knuckle primary, accusing the opponent of then Republican senatorial hopeful Mel Martinez of playing to the radical homosexual lobby.

Martinez blamed the ads on young Turks in his campaign and apologized to his GOP rival. Weeks later Martinez found himself again blaming a staff member after a press release from his campaign likened U.S. immigration agents to armed thugs for seizing Elián González from his Miami home in 2000.

Now, for the third time, Martinez finds himself under fire -- and blaming an aide for the conflagration. This time, Martinez said he has accepted the resignation of a staff member in his Senate office for penning the now-infamous political memo that suggested Republicans in Washington could use the plight of brain-damaged Terri Schiavo to bash Democrats, singling out Martinez's fellow Florida senator, Democrat Bill Nelson.

Trying to use the Schiavo family plight for political advantage, attacking a rival Republican as playing to the 'radical homosexual lobby,' and keeping a son from his Cuban father to get the conservative Cuban vote in Florida. Ah! Those kind of family values! I guess we now know what kind of help Forrester is bringing in to his NJ campaign.

And more on Mel Martinez anti-gay Senate campaing from a another Miami Herald article published on July 12, 2004 ("Senate candidate fights gay marriage" by Marc Caputo):

Mel Martinez stood near the altar Sunday evening and promised to fight the ''homosexual agenda,'' thereby positioning his U.S. Senate campaign on the right wing of what the faithful are calling the culture wars.

It is here, in places like the First Baptist Church of Orlando, that the religious right is drawing inspiration from preachers and politicians like Martinez, who promises to support the president's call for an unprecedented constitutional amendment seeking to define marriage only as the union of a man and a woman.

Though Martinez's position largely reflects the sentiment of the other Republican Senate candidates who are also campaigning under the steeple, his in-person campaign stop made the most of a captive audience of about 200 assembled to watch a political-religious sermon simulcast from a Tennessee church to houses of worship and radio stations across the nation.

Headlining the show were two of the biggest Christian crusaders for the amendment: James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, and Charles Colson, who established Prison Fellowship Ministries after serving time for his role in Watergate. They warned the thousands who presumably tuned in that, if left unchecked, activist judges and politicians would continue the culture war against Christianity. They predicted preachers would eventually be banned from even criticizing gays and that gay role playing would be taught in schools.

Enough said.

CONLAMIC Watch: Pimping for Sen. Majority Leader Bill Frist & John Roberts

I recently wrote about a statement released by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in which Howard Dean lamented an address by Republican National Committee (RCN) Chair Ken Mehlman at a gathering organized in DC by the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders (CONLAMIC).

Dean, criticizing Mehlman and the Bush government for trumpeting false pro-immigration policies at the CONLAMIC gathering, nevertheless praised the Coalition and said that he wished to set "the record straight" by telling CONLAMIC "the truth" about the Bush administration's record on immigration.

The DNC statement went out on September 22, 2005.

Hm... Maybe the DNC should have been at the press conference organized on that same date by CONLAMIC with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist
in support of Judge John Roberts' bid to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States?

Unless the Democrats lose their fear of confronting fundamentalist religious pimping, be it Latino or not, they look just as cynical as they say Ken Mehlman's statements are.

As for Roberts, minutes ago he was confirmed as the 17th Supreme Court Chief Justice, to CONLAMIC's delight, and the DNC's dismay (they had opposed the nomination as well).

In some ways, while CONLAMIC stuck to their principles and won, the DNC and the Democratic party continue to split strategies and lose even when the current government has the lowest approval numbers of any administration in recent memory.

Howard Dean and the DNC miss the mark on CONLAMIC

Photo: CONLAMIC director Miguel Rivera outside the Bronx Court House on March 3, 2004, announcing a pro-Bush and anti-same-sex marriage rally, and some community activists rejecting CONLAMIC's hateful message.

Interesting news from DC: Today the Democratic National Committee (DNC) released a statement crediting the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders (CONLAMIC) for "the work they’ve done to promote immigration reform and fair treatment for undocumented immigrants" but also wishing to set them straight, as it were, or - in DNC parlance - telling them "the truth."

Apparently CONLAMIC hosted the Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Ken Mehlman today at a gathering in DC where he spoke about all the wonderful things that President Bush had done for Latinos in general including Latino immigrants (huh?).

To tell "the truth" though the DNC would do well to do some research, 'cause they ain't necessarily going to teach CONLAMIC anything they don't know:
If the DNC wanted to tell 'the truth' it would have called it out as it truly is: CONLAMIC is as complicit in shelling out for a morally bankrupt government as anyone and no amount of 'truth-telling' will convince CONLAMIC to drop the benefits they might get for being the calling-card for the most conservative of politicians who seek to hold their nose - while pretending they care about minorities.
